Get up to ₹78,000 subsidy on rooftop solar
The Government of India’s rooftop solar scheme pays a direct subsidy into your bank account when you install a grid-connected solar system at home. Pair it with net metering and most families see their electricity bill fall close to zero.
TPIL handles the paperwork, the portal application, installation and the DISCOM inspection — you just enjoy the savings.
- Direct bank transfer
- No middlemen
- Up to 300 free units / month

What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
Launched in February 2024, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is India’s flagship programme to put solar panels on one crore homes. It helps households generate their own power, cut monthly bills and reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.
Eligible homeowners receive Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of up to ₹78,000, paid through Direct Benefit Transfer once the system is installed, inspected and commissioned.
- No agents or commissions
- No hidden deductions
- Concessional bank loans available
How much subsidy will you get?
The central subsidy depends on the size of your rooftop system and is capped at ₹78,000.
| Solar system size | Central subsidy (CFA) | Typical monthly bill it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | Up to ₹1,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 | ₹1,000 – ₹2,000 |
| 3 kW | ₹78,000 | ₹2,000 – ₹3,000 |
| 4 kW | ₹78,000 | ₹3,000 – ₹4,000 |
| 5 kW | ₹78,000 | ₹4,000 – ₹5,000 |
| 10 kW | ₹78,000 | ₹8,000 and above |
Some states, including Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, add their own top-up subsidy on top of the central amount. Housing societies / RWAs have a separate limit for common facilities. Final amounts are as per MNRE guidelines at the time of application.

Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
Any Indian household with its own residential property, a valid electricity connection and a suitable shadow-free roof can apply. Commercial and industrial properties are not covered under this scheme.
Can I get the subsidy if I live in an apartment?
Individual flats usually can’t install rooftop solar on their own, but your housing society or RWA can apply for a shared system for common areas under the group housing category.
How long does it take to receive the subsidy?
Once your system is commissioned and the certificate is uploaded, the subsidy is usually credited to your bank account within 30–45 days.
Can I take a loan along with the subsidy?
Yes. Nationalised banks offer collateral-free solar loans at concessional rates under the scheme. The subsidy is credited separately to your account.
Does the subsidy apply to off-grid or battery systems?
The subsidy is meant for grid-connected rooftop systems with net metering. Hybrid systems may qualify if your DISCOM allows net metering; pure off-grid systems do not.
Which solar panels qualify?
Only DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) panels made in India with Indian cells, from ALMM-listed manufacturers, are eligible. TPIL uses only qualifying panels for subsidy installations.
Is the subsidy taxable?
The subsidy is a government grant towards the cost of your system. For personal tax questions, please check with your tax advisor.
